Insights into the Lithuanian innovation and healthcare ecosystem

Study trip from 10-12 June 2024 to Vilnius

The I3HIES project, dedicated to promoting interregional innovation investments and collaboration between health innovation ecosystems, recently conducted a study tour to Lithuania organized by the Lithuanian Innovation Centre.
This trip underlines the project’s commitment to transforming the healthcare sector through increased international cooperation and targeted innovation.

The consortium, consisting of nine partners from Hungary, Austria, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, aims to address critical areas in the healthcare sector, including medical technology, emergency equipment and compliance with the Medical Device Regulation (MDR). The three-day intensive experience included visits to organizations and innovation stakeholders and contributed to strengthening the Lithuanian healthcare innovation ecosystem.

SMART Health DIH, a member of the eDIH Vilnius consortium, is driving digital transformation in healthcare by collecting high-quality data to improve diagnostics and personalized interventions. Key areas include telemedicine, clinical trials, international collaboration and digital training with expertise in AI, cybersecurity and medical technology.

Digital Health in Lithuania, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania
Since 2008, Lithuania has developed a Digital Health System, which includes a national health information exchange platform and various e-services such as e-prescriptions and e-referrals. Patient health records are centralized and accessible through a patient portal, ensuring seamless access for healthcare providers and pharmacies. Interestingly, online medicine purchases and deliveries have become extremely efficient, with 70.000 bookings processed automatically every month. Lithuania is among the few European countries that have adopted the Law on Secondary Use of Health Data, which regulates the process of repeated use of health data while ensuring the right to privacy and protection of personal data.

Association LithuaniaBIO
Established in 2003, LithuaniaBIO brings together institutions in the Lithuanian life sciences and biotechnology sector to strengthen the role of biotechnology in the economy. The life sciences sector is one of the priority sectors of the Lithuanian economy and currently contributes about 2,6% to the country's GDP. Lithuania's goal is to achieve a 2030% share of GDP from the life sciences industry by 5.

Baltic Sandoz Ventures
Baltic Sandoz Ventures seeks future heroes in life sciences and deep tech. They invest in early-stage, research and development-focused teams tackling complex technical challenges with high commercial potential. Simplifying access to data in collaboration with the government data agency has empowered innovators to better understand regulations and accelerate medical breakthroughs.

Center for Innovative Medicine
The Centre for Innovative Medicine (IMC) is a government research institute and part of the national biobank and a member of BBMRI ERIC. The IMC translates basic science into clinically relevant knowledge and strategies, conducts research at all levels and collaborates with over 60 countries.

Life Sciences Center, Vilnius University (VU LSC)
Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC), also Lithuania's representative at EMBL, conducts research on biodiversity, ecosystems, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biomolecular structures, genome editing, disease mechanisms and biomarkers and publishes in prestigious journals such as Nature and Science. They carry out 38 major projects and have well-equipped laboratories, including a special laboratory for training high school teachers in life sciences. The collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics provides both financial and intangible support in the form of knowledge and expertise.

biobank
The aim of the Vilnius Santaros Klinikos Biobank is to provide the Lithuanian and international scientific and industrial community with access to large amounts of standardized and structured samples of human biological material in order to expand the basic knowledge of various diseases and to optimize and improve the diagnosis or treatment of diseases.

Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC)
The Physical Science and Technology Center (FTMC) aims to generate and utilize scientific knowledge for the benefit of society and the development of high technology by conducting basic and applied research and experimental investigations. The center houses various engineering laboratories, including a laser/optics laboratory that uses super-fast cameras for eye imaging and an electro-biochemistry laboratory with lab-on-a-chip devices for experiments with organoids and cancer cells.
