CrossCluster @ bisy GmbH

A sustainable biotechnology company with its own brewery and an award-winning chef

At the invitation of the founder and CEO Dr. Anton Glieder the biotechnology company bisy GmbH opened on September 9, 2021 as part of a cross cluster event (human technology cluster & green tech cluster).

At the newly established company headquarters in Hofstätten an der Raab, innovative, molecular tools for industry and medicine are developed.

After a brief welcome from the HTS cluster CEO Dr. Johann Harer, Toni Glieder gave an interesting insight into the construction history of the two buildings. Particular attention was paid to sustainable building. A lot of wood and other natural materials were used for both the ex- and the interior design. Furthermore, energy from solar cells was used for the efficient use of energy and resources for the entire building. In this way, the photovoltaic system including the battery can generate the essential part of the electricity required - so the buildings are almost self-sufficient in energy. It goes without saying that several e-cars can be charged at the same time.

A natural flower meadow, trees, flowers and a compost heap, overgrown with pumpkin and zucchini, round off the pleasant atmosphere in the outdoor area.

Bisy offers tailor-made solutions for expression strategies of all types of proteins, development of new expression strains, expression kits, including vectors and strains, expression and feasibility studies as well as the licensing of new expression technologies. "We also offer kits for biocatalysts," explained Jasmin Fischer to the audience. "Bisy also owns IP for innovative expression technologies for protein co-expression and methanol-independent induction," explained the scientist.

Financing all of this was and is a great challenge for the young company. Part of the construction was financed with public funds and subsidies, a lot was simply tackled by Toni Glieder and his family, digging, painting and planting.

What other financial options are there for startups and founders was explained by Dr. Alexander Schwartz from IST cube to the interested audience afterwards. In Klosterneuburg, at the location of IST Austria, IST cube invests in aspiring, academic start-ups and spin-offs with high technical and scientific innovative strength and supports them in the pre-seed or seed phase with an early-stage investment. IST cube helps with the transition from a scientific project to a commercial company.

After the keynote speeches, there was a guided tour through the biotechnology laboratory and the “kitchen”, in which the self-planted pumpkins, the cultivated edible mushrooms and the self-brewed light and dark beer were made into a delicious meal by Alexander Kalcher from Alex2go. After the event, each participant was allowed to take a glass of beer soup home.

So it's no wonder that scientists from all over the world are drawn to Hofstätten an der Raab.

Many thanks to Toni Glieder for the hospitality!
