v.l.n.r.: Mag. B. Weber, Dr. Peter Riedler (beide UNICORN), Dr. Heinz Mayer (JOANNEUM RESEARCH), Josef Steiner, DI Maria Fellner, MBA (digitAAL Life), Paul Putz, MBA, Mag. Sebastian Goldfuß, Mag. Peter Helesic (alle drei Danube Angels)

DigitAAL Life GmbH is a young, dynamic spin-off from the innovation forge JOANNEUM RESEARCH. Shortly before World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, 2021, investors from the international Funderbeam platform will join the Danube Angels from Vienna as the lead investor.

Thanks to this first round of financing, additional aws seed funding and several research projects in strategic cooperation with JOANNEUM RESEARCH, the company can now take the next development and growth steps, such as the further development and certification of the product for dementia therapy and diagnostics as well as internationalization in the Regions DACH, BENELUX and CEE. The company location at UNICORN in Graz offers the ideal innovation environment for this.

DIGITAAL life (www.digitaal.life) was founded in Graz in spring 2020 as a spin-off from JOANNEUM RESEARCH. The prototype for the product emerged from several cooperative research projects since 2015 with partners from medicine, nursing and practice and is now being launched on the market by the start-up. The tablet-based IT solution for the multimodal activation of cognitive performance and unique eye tracking as a biomarker is highly relevant to society and has great potential for scaling.

Limitations in cognitive performance and especially dementia are a global challenge. Around 50 million people around the world are currently affected by dementia, a cure is not in sight and this number is increasing due to the aging population (131 million is expected by 2050). Therefore, the WHO and “The Lancet Commissions” recommend combined and personalized physical, mental and social (so-called “multimodal”) interventions as the only effective approach.

The innovation of digitAAL Life GmbH is a tablet-based, playful training that aims to delay the onset of dementia and slow its progression, which is currently being scientifically investigated in the multimodAAL study (www.multimodAAL.at). For simultaneous diagnostics, a new type of eye tracking solution is also used as a biomarker in order to monitor the dementia status in combination with other outcome parameters.
